What is YPLC?
YPLC is an educational program that provides NYC High School students with a chance to write an original play and tell their story, have it performed by professional actors at TeatroStageFest, and win $500 if the play wins 1st Prize, or $250 if it wins the 2nd or 3rd Prize, in a celebrated playwriting competition.
Why is it called "Latino Challenge" when the competition is open to every NYC High School student?
Because at least one of the main characters in the plays submitted must be Latino. Other than that, students can pick their own theme and storyline! They write in English, Spanish, or a combination of both.
What if students need help writing their play?
They can call Young Playwrights, Inc. at (212) 594-5440 or email yplc@teatrostagefest.org. This year, TeatroStageFest and Young Playwrights, Inc. also offered FREE Playwriting Workshops with established actors, directors, and playwrights. Students shared their questions and read scenes from their works-in-progress.
What are the guidelines to the Young Playwrights Latino Challenge Contest?
- Keep it real.
- Write in English or Spanish or a combination of the two.
- Style, subject, and length are up to you, but your work must be original. No screenplays, musicals, or adaptations.
- You must submit your own play. Submissions by parents or teachers don't count.
- On the title page, list your name, school, grade, address (including apt #), e-mail, and phone #.
- Type and staple your play. Remember to number your pages. No e-mail submissions!
- Keep your original script and submit a copy since submissions will not be returned.
- You may submit more than one play. Go for it! This is your chance to be heard!
- Each entrant will receive a written evaluation of the play by a theater professional and an invitation to the Awards Ceremony.
I am a NYC High School student... can I still submit my play to the 2009 Competition?
The 2009 Competition is currently closed. Join the YPLC Community on MySpace and Facebook, and we will inform you of the next competition and round of workshops!
How many people can I bring with me to the Awards Ceremony?
As many as you can. It is a free event for the whole family. Just make sure you register by e-mailing yplc@teatrostagefest.org. Seats are on a first come first serve basis, and they are going fast!
