From Havana to Harlem:

100 Years of Mario Bauzá, Featuring Bobby Sanabria Big Band and Guests

Saturday, June 18 @ 8:00 PM

Company Name: Bobby Sanabria Big Band

Since the first appearance of the legendary Machito back in the 1940’s, Afro-Cuban Jazz has had a powerful presence at The Apollo.  One of the founding fathers of this music was Mario Bauzá, who helped to introduce Latin music to the U.S, and performed with many of the famed Harlem bandleaders.

In this special concert, The Apollo and the critically acclaimed Bobby Sanabria Big Band will pay homage to the birth of Afro-Cuban Jazz, showcase the state of the genre today, and explore its future trajectory. Bauzá was a mentor to Bobby Sanabria, who was Bauza’s drummer for eight years. He recorded three Grammy-nominated albums with the pioneering musician.

Bobby Sanabria will be joined on stage by Guest Artists: Felipe Luciano, Candido, David Amram, Jon Faddis, La Bruja, and Charenee Wade.

About Bobby Sanabria:

The son of Puerto Rican parents, Bobby Sanabria was born and raised in the "Fort Apache" section of New York City's South Bronx.  He was inspired and encouraged to pursue music by Maestro Tito Puente.  Today, Sanabria is known as a leader in the Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and jazz fields as both a drummer and percussionist and is recognized as one of the most articulate musician-scholars living today.

Bobby Sanabria and his Quarteto Aché is one of three companies featured in this year’s Festival that will travel to São Paulo, Brazil, in late summer to participate in TeatroStageFest’s first Latino International Theater Festival of New York, Inc. - SESC-SP International Cultural Engagement Partnership.
